Preventing another balance through a withholding review

An old tax bill is a useful prompt to check whether current withholding still fits.

Start with your situation

Use recent paystubs rather than last year's payroll settings. If there are two earners or a new side income, include that change in the review before submitting updated instructions.

Check the whole income picture

Withholding is money sent toward tax from wages or certain other payments. A new job, multiple jobs, marriage, or income changes can alter the result. The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator can help eligible wage earners and pension recipients review their position. It uses current information, so an old paystub or incomplete household picture can weaken the estimate.

Review before changing payroll instructions

Gather recent paystubs and relevant household income information. Compare the estimate with what is already withheld, then follow the tool's guidance and applicable form instructions. Keep a copy of any updated form and check later paystubs to see the change. Revisit the calculation after major changes instead of treating one adjustment as permanent.

  • Use current paystubs
  • Include relevant additional income
  • Check payroll after an adjustment

Questions to consider

Will increasing withholding erase an old balance?

It generally addresses current tax payments. An existing assessed balance needs its own payment or resolution review.
